Brief Memories of Horses

I have a brief memory of a horse
Hanging over me
Black eyes solid like nightwater
My face suspended in the middle. A warm cloud from her nose
Mist
Not soft as I want it to be – the skin white as the white
Lain over the earth for days and days
Snow in sunless winter – still, I’d like to reach out
And touch her
So she knows that I am here.

We are alike in some ways
New to this world
In unknown too-tall trees.

Could I
Cross the fence, steady my shoes
In the dark wood slats
One by one
Until I join you in the clearing
Among mud and green and smaller creatures

Would you like my red dress
I have short hair like you
I am light enough to sit on your back
Without you knowing like floating
Like whisper
Like shallow pool water
I will be light enough to let you wander
Wherever we can go

There and then

Mother’s hands around my ankles
Telling me to come back
And I hear the music there’s dirt all over
Your new dress, Alexandra and the voices in the barn
Are already dancing but there,
New horse, there.

My palm’s too small for the bridge of your nose.
Show me the branches of your jaw when you turn
Keep me in the corner of your eyes
As long as you can.

Spoonful

You boiled the rice
Spoonful of oil, spoonful of salt.
Wouldn’t let me near you in the kitchen.
I said the black will stain your teeth
If your tea remains milkless
Suddenly young and clear her eyes watched
Oh, but a cloud.

His arms do turn the empty
One still big enough for him
And there is still light to be hatched
In the floorboard lacquer
Someday he will see through
All alone aglow restless staring
Soothed crying for the one I want
Who sometimes comes
Who dreams
The window
A fork in the cupboard
Well at least it’s something.

Sundress over my head, cobalt.
Cheeks kissed by heat waiting
And sweating and waiting all summer
Only once
I went to the beach
Waves in my hand until lilac
I shivered all the way home
Foolish blood
Probably about you
Your room and the sigh and the door
Waiting and wanting for you to really
Really love me.

Maybe pass a cigarette back and forth
Unevenly split
Eating off the blue plates
The good oil and the lazy sun all over.
In the morning who knows

I love the light on the basil.
Green as the universe grows in song.

When was the last time you sang for me
I wrote you a note and you kept it and
Would you believe me if
Black coffee stains your teeth
The salt on the lip of the spoon
Slivers the small moon in the curtain
Crack.

In unbekannt zu-hohen Bäumen.

Behalt mich in deinem Augenwinkel

Ganz allein ein-leuchtend ruheloses Starren

Wirklich liebst.

Vielleicht eine Zigarette hin und her reichen
Ungleich geteilt

Auf-bruch.
